In at least one jurisdiction, the cost of installing and repairing these cameras has come completely out of the local police's Traffic Services Unit budget, though the revenues go to city hall's general coffers. Because the fees for the machines were way over initial estimates, and the cameras continue to cost money in upkeep, there is now no budget for police to do traffic stops. So drivers can feel free to drive unsafely everywhere excpet the several dozen places the cameras are.

Furthermore, in this jurisdiction at least one of the cameras has NEVER caught a single offender, while another catches over 8,000 a year. The average is somewhere in the hundreds of offences a year.

Is it just me, or does it seem to you that the yellow lights at intersections with red light cameras are a lot quicker to go to red?

The LA Times article was the topic of a short segment on Bill Handel's morning drive-time show (KFI, 640 AM) and a longer segment John & Ken's afternoon drive-time show (KFI, 640 AM). J&K were pointing out how stupid the practice is but they're hardly legitimate critics because all they want to do is create controversy, hence listeners. It's still nice to have some exposure to the masses.

So true. Did you see the LA Times article about how 80% of red light camera tickets in LA are for "rolling right turns." Unbelievable.

Your blog is great. I can't believe I just found it now. We're doing something similar over at http://www.commuteroutrage.com - although we're also tackling subway and airport congestion as well.

Let us know what you think, and keep up the great work!
