We don't need any more fuel/highway taxes of any kind. The politicians use this money for other pork barrel projects. That is why there is never enough money to fix the roads. For example, in 2008 the state of Michigan used gas tax money to build a fence along a freeway to keep turtles off the road. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is another good example. This road has high tolls, yet the road is in poor condition.

Well written article.

Equity
The fuel tax does not pick winners and losers or discriminate against different groups or classes of fuel users. The tax on a gallon of fuel is the same for every customer. All fuel users have the same stake in the taxes assigned motor fuels.

If the tax (currently) collected via the fuel tax is not enough, then (1) the tax rate needs to be adjusted accordingly and/or (2) the taxes currently collected should only be used for the purpose stated and not used for other purposes.

I agree that the current fuel tax system is easy (for me) to understand and easy to implement.

If more people use significantly less fuel, then perhaps a different way can be used to fund transportation needs. Until then keep the system as is currently is, with adjustments to the fuel tax as needed.

(An energy tax could be added to electricity if this is the new power source for our vehicles to work with the fuel tax. I am not sure how this would work, but I would rather have a simpler system than a more complicated system if possible.)

just when you think they can't get any stupider i am ceased to be amazed. Why would anyone want to change a simple system that works if you have to have more money for streets then why not raise fuel tax to cover it. but only to the point of what is need for our traffic infrastructure and nothing else. The only logical explanation is control and power. Why not gain more information on every person. You know it would be gps based allowing them to follow every move you make just remember big brothers watching and we should no longer put up with this crap we need to remind our government that the people are in charge and they are representatives of us or we will remove them.
