Joe asks "the question I haven’t heard any LEO satisfactory answer is why 95% of the citations issued are for speeding when speeding (might) account for as much as 5% of the total accidents."

More speeding tickets are writen than any other citation because speeding is a more common violations. Speed contriutes to 31-33% of all traffic fatalities 2nd only to DUI/DWI. Possibly Joe could point out which violations cause more crashes than speeding.

I have making efforts for about a week now to determine what city department in Aurora Colorado keeps records of traffic speed monitoring, and the variations of speeds against a reference speed limit of 40 mph on Chambers Road.

Either they don't keep records of such data, or they don't want to give it up. This has been a frustrating week in order to find some hard data to take to traffic court. I was ticketed for driving at 45 mph along Chambers Road that has a posted speed limit of 40 mph. Any one who travels on Chambers Road knows that aside from the few who do travel exactly at 40 mph or lower, the majority of drivers are typically 5 mph or higher than the posted speed limit.

It has been a know fact in Colorado for decades that ticket writing time for most cops is when a driver exceeds 50 mph along Chambers Road, and it is also a know fact that traffic speed averages about 45 mph. I have never heard of anyone receiving a ticket for driving 41 mph let alone 45 mph on chambers Road, or in any 40 mph zone. Have you?

I want to fight this in court because we all know what the normal speeds are on Chambers Road, and police officers have never ticketed anyone for not driving exactly at 40 mph. We often drive by police officers at speeds higher than 40 mph and the only time they come after you is if your speed is 51 mph or higher.

Do you know where Aurora keeps traffic speed data if they do at all? Please contact me.

So I keep reading peoples comments about how cops don't benefit from tickets. I am wondering if my county is the only one screwing its people over, or if it is more common than people know. Marion County Oregon...has a "traffic team," It says in their website...(And this is copy and pasted directly,) "In 2004, the team was restructured as a self-funding unit. This structure using funds from traffic citations versus your tax dollars." I told people this and they didn't believe me. Please visit the Marion County Website if you don't believe me.

"Jeff says:
May 11, 2009 at 4:20 pmAgain …I have to laugh ! instead of slowing down and following the same rules as 95% of drivers…You think the police should change, not you..it’s all about making money…LOL…I get the same check no matter how many tickets I write. YOU are the one that needs to get off your power trip and obey the law"

I must say it is entertaining to have a COP suggest "getting off a power trip"- LOL! Every COP I have ever met & I have friends & family that are married, date or have done so and they were ALL CONTROL FREAKS ON POWER TRIPS!

If you would have read and understood my post Officer Jeff- you would see that I stated the city and the department are making money from citations...never suggested that the officers pay increased or decreased.

And again, if you had actully read my post you would have seen THAT I WAS NOT SPEEDING. My car is a year old & I ALWAYS use my cruise control. It was set 4-5 miles NOT 15 over the posted speed limit and I was traveling slower than other cars in the pack. I just happened to be the chosen one at that moment.

This area like many others are know speed traps & MANY, MANY, MANY have received erroneous tickets for 15 over the limit.

As I stated before- you may be blessed to work in an area that does not participate in this egregious practice and BRAVO to you & your department for not doing so! I HAVE NO issue with the law being enforced and "ACTUAL" speeders being cited...again, my issue is with bugus ticket writting in the name of making the city & department money & in order to fullfill your ticket "quota".

So you keep doing your job Officer Jeff & I WILL KEEP OBEYING the law & use my cruise control but I will also continue to stand up for what is right and fight against wrong!

Cheers to Officer Jeff who is the most honest COP in the US and works for the best Department in the US! If only ALL departments and officers could achieve this status!!!

This is a reply to "Officer Jeff"

Jeff- I speak only for myself but your post reminded me why I have anger for the police department in general...maybe you are blessed to work for a department that is not citation driven but is rather concerned about true crime that does hurt and degrade the community but at least one of the major departments in my area IS citation driven. Often the PD try to deny citation quotas which is TOTAL BS!!!

My issue is not with officers enforcing the law to protect the community from true harm & crime...I have issue with BOGUS speeding tickets in order to fulfill quotas & make the city some cash!
Example- A magical 15 over that was actually less than 5 over...why 15- points & $ amount! It's a dirty, dirty business and sadly the innocent have no ground to stand on in court. The "radar gun & the officer" say it is so & they are the know all perfect ones in front of the judge (who works for the city as well) so we are screwed!!!!

After my bogus ticket and wasted time in court I made a ton of noise. I complained to everyone I could in the local city government, the PD, the City Attorneys office, warned everyone of driving in certain areas & shared my story, met MANY who had the same or very similar exeriences with the same department, & called for an investigation. Funny thing has occured since then- they are not in the normal locations as usual 2-3 times per wk/every week and I do not see them writing citations as often.

So Officer Jeff- please know that there are those of us on here that do not have issue with you enforcing the law when lives are in danger from speeding but we are pissed and fed-up with the power trip & corruption forced upon you guys by the higher powers in order to make the dept and city money!...wait- I should clarify in closing.

The top dogs in the PD set "requirements" for Rank-in-File Officers. When the "requirements" are not met they may face "disciplinary action". The "requirement" results are simply a "measure of performance".
See guys- when I put it this way it's all good!..yea right!

STAND UP AND FIGHT BACK AGAINST BOGUS CITATIONS!!!!!!

Officers who find the need to be on here- do your REAL job- protect & serve the people...not the all mightly city & dept DOLLAR!!!!!!!!!

I have a great plan for all of those with everything the Police Should be doing. First come walk a mile in our shoes, during that mile go tell a mother or father that their child is dead due to injuries sustained in a car crash, try that out for size. Go tell a husband or wife that their spouse is dead due to a car crash, go tell a child that their mommy or daddy is dead due to a car crash. The first question they will ask is "How" the most common (proven fact) answer is "speed" the funny part about the things I have read is: If anyone of you got into a crash you would be the first to cry that the cops "never" are on that road doing their jobs. Why don't you guys suck it up when you get caught. Look at your odds, you speed everytime you get in your car and how often do you get caught? The odds are still in your favor ! suck it up or obey the speed limits.

Oh, on another note, some of the legal advice on here is the worse I have ever heard, I would not go into court and try to fight a ticket with time over distance you will end up helping out the cop..lol...also most courts accept lidar and radar there for you can not fight the theroy it already has notice in that court you will just end up wasting your time researching information that you will not be able to use in court.

Brian they understand but they feel if they complain long enough and they call every speed enforcement effort a speed trap the LAW will suddenly cease to exist and they will be free to drive as fast as they want in thier own little world where the laws of physics already don't exist.
