Good advice... to a point. It just depends on how much you drive - if you're driving 30,000 miles a year it adds up a lot quicker than a typical-for-California 15,000 or a typical-for-other-places 12,000.

2500 miles/month @ 15mpg (typical SUV) = about 160 gallons = $640 at $4/gallon
Saving half of that at 30mpg (typical compact car) = your new car payment right there each month (and the compact car typically is much cheaper than the SUV.)

Are these typical, no, not even out here, but I know people who are stuck with commutes that long.

Having ditched my SUV during a prior gas price squeeze in 2002, giving up twos of year of payments to go on the truck for 5 years on a Honda Civic hurt... but the payments were 1/3 smaller, and Civic is now paid off and costs less to keep NOW at 150k miles than the Durango did at about 80k.

Gas prices were a lot cheaper then, and it was the right choice. The real trick is not buying oversize and under-efficient vehicles in the first place.

Other options are to modify the vehicle you currently have to get better fuel economy.

Flex fuel retrofits are a possiblity, then set up a still, make your own ehtanol for say 1.50 per gallon.

Engine will last longer, even if gas comes down which I doubt.

Great post! People are running around like chickens with their heads cut off about this whole percieved crisis when all they need to do is sit back and think. It doesn't help that we have doom-sayer media that pronounces public sentiment to be worried... which, in turn, COMPOUNDS THE SITUATION. If the media stopped reporting about the "Terrible situation" everyone is in and, I dunno, started reporting how good things really are, trying times though they may be.
