Stick with manual, and AWD. The BMW 1 series is a waste of money as well. You're better served in a 3. BMW can't get it in their heads to bring over ECONOMICAL diesels instead of their damn 300hp twin turbo diesel. And wait till '09 when Audi will bring the A4 diesel to market, along with the crappy Q7 diesel. Merc should be doing the same with the smart diesel which gets 70+ mpg. German cars tend to have lots of power at low RPMs but Japanese cars such a Honda and Toyota must reach a higher RPM in order to get power. When I floor my Nissan from a stop it hardly moves but once it gets up to speed it can move. The VW starts to move quick from a stop. As for the Smart car I would not want it because it's too small which is safety hazard. If I'm driving a Smart car higher vehicles might not see me since the Smart car is so small and can hide in a vehicles blind spot.
