The Seattle Post Intelligencer just ran an editorial supporting a return to 55 mph speed limits (August 18, 2008). So I would encourage anyone who lives near Seattle to write a reasoned letter to the editor opposing this nonsense. I first got my driver's license in 1965, so I've been through this absurdity once and do not wish to do so again.

I would like to share this data, I think It's interesting reading material:

VITAL STATISTICS

1. Avoid riding automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.

2. Do not stay at home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.

3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

4. Avoid travelling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.

5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. Above all else, avoid hospitals.

6. .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is church.

This info in from my church's Sunday bulletin.

55 is laughably low and mind-numbing, most people will all ways drive at speeds that are reasonable and prudent regardless if it saves time or not, or if it saves a few pennies going 55 then let's say 75. That is also questionable, today's state of the art highly efficient cars cannot compare with the 4 barrel wobbling square barges from the 70's.

It certainly seems that there's two Americas, one for politicians, police and their families that don't get tickets for speeding and one America that police love terrorizing citizens with unrealistic 55 mph posted highways. Especially states like NJ and NY that still have the dreaded 55 on interstate freeways wide enough to land an A380 Airbus.

Some female senator from California just proposed a national 60mph speed limit. What rock do these creatures hide in?

Sen Warner is from what the only US state to define 80 mph as per se "reckless driving"?!

By that "standard" then Europeans are "reckless" drivers for driving at legal speeds.

Just another example of the criminal Commonwealth of Virginia as bearing false witness...

I'm really getting sick and tired of the media ramming this 55 mph speed trash down our throats. It kind of reminds me of nuns forcing me to eat liver and fish when I was a boy;by the way both of these I horribly despise. I HATE 55 EVEN MORE It's a DEAD ISSUE which needs to be buried alongside NIXON'S ROTTING CORPSE!!! The 55 mph limit was wholeheartedly ignored then and certainly will be all the more ignored now; I DON'T CARE IF SENATOR WARNER (ELMER FUDD) AND THESE OTHER IGNORAMUSES ON CAPITOL HILL IMPLEMENT HITLER'S "FINAL SOLUTION" TO ENFORCE IT!! WE WILL NEVER DRIVE 55 SO THEY MIGHT AS WELL FORGET IT!!!
