I'm from the Netherlands and we usually laugh about the Americans complaining about paying $4 per gallon (no offense). This is what we pay:

1.60 euro per liter
2.4 dollar per liter
2.4 dollar per 0,264172052 gallon
9,08 dollar per gallon

That's more than twice as much! And I have to agree: it isn't all bad. You're especially right about point 4 which has already come true here: basically every car around here is already a more or less gas saving one. And using less oil for your cars in anyones country is always a good thing, right?

Not exactly true about the high mileage diesels coming. BMW in all its universal stupidity has seen fit to only give the US the 335 twin turbo diesel which gets 35 mpg, at a cost of a whopping $50k. What in the hell are they thinking!!! And the Merc that has been available is their one and only 32-35mpg E class at $55k. This just cements in the minds of 'merican consumers that diesel is inferior to gas mileage, which was shown in a survey that was taken somewhere.

But luckily VW is bringing the Jetta back this year, and Audi will bring the A4 and Q7 next year. And at 40-50 mpg, I'll trade in my Audi A6. http://audiworld.com/news/08/efficiency-marathon/

Those rascally Germans have outsmarted the incompetent EPA once again by installing technology to trap those diesel pollutants and burn them off in the engine. And hopefully Merc will get their brains out of their asses and bring the SMART diesel over like they should have done in the first place instead of the gas version. But the EPA rules I guess made that impossible last year.

Another strike against the incompetent US automakers.
