The "do you do things like this to your car" is old hat. How about updating that info thats been rehashed from the past? What sorta neanderthals drive cars in America?
I may be sexist and say probably women would do this or the less well of..but what about a feature on safety:
How about do you drive like this?
No one is a bad driver or are they?

If the check engine light is on then you have a diagnostic code which id's the system malfunction. The light will stay on until the problem is repaired and the code cleared.

I am an Olds fanatic and hope GM sinks for destroying the best American car ever but the OBD2 system is pretty efficent and troubleshoots well with the proper equipment. A code reader will ID the code and a scan tool will pinpoint the problem. Any compenant GM service department should be able to id, locate and repair the problem using GM authorized repair and diagnostic procedures. Many aftermarket and independent repair shops do not have the equipment or training to to the job. If your GM dealer service department could not get this done, find a larger dealership with a professional service department. By the way, the drive train and electronics of your Olds are shared technology within General Motors Corporation so any GM dealer service department can service your vehicle.

@Russ Try unplugging the battery and tapping the break a few times. This should reset your ECU.

Russ, I'm not a GM guy, so I don't have an answer, but I would suggest starting with the service manager at the dealer, and ask him to get a factory rep involved if it can't be easily fixed.

Does anyone have a solution for having to drive cars 100 plus miles to reset a car's computer (engine check light) before it can pass the NY State inspection? I have been trying to get my 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora pass this inspection. I have had the car to a GM dealer & two other mechanics who can not fix the secondary air emission problem, thus the reset light comes back on every 75 to 100 miles. The out of business Oldsmobile Division has been no help. We have put an additional 500 miles on this car going no where. I understand the computer reset is a typical problem in all cars who have the engine check light on.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

As a 20-year veteran of Ford, I've seen many boneheaded screwups and pulled a few of my own!

Probably the most spectacular was back in the 70's when cars had a vacumm-operated automatic park brake release. I would use a hemostat to clamp the vacuum line to that device so I could set the idle speed in drive.

One day I guess I just got to moving too fast and removed the clamp before I put the vehicle in park.

The car took off and crashed into the dispatch tower send the dispatcher in one direction and everything else in another.

There was not a whole lot of damage and no one was hurt, but to this day I cannot see the movie Stripes and watch Sgt Hulka leaping from the exploding tower without thinking of that incident!
