I think you are having trouble understanding how diverse the wagon market is these days. There are lots of hatchbacks and sports wagons, that aren't traditional wagons, but they are more a station wagon than any other kind of auto. Let me reiterate just because it doesn't have wood-grain, doesn't mean that it's not a wagon.

PS. Have you looked at the long term reliability reports for VW's or Passant's in general. If you are interested in putting your mechanic's son or daughter through college, this is the car for you.

Most of these car are not wagons - and most of the cars you highlight are junk. Passat Wagon is the smartest buy of any vehicle - you get everything for a great price

This is a tough category to compare as buyers have tons of options and slight twists to the categories. I have a Subaru WRX Wagon which I picked because I wanted a fun sporty car to drive and still be able to carry 4 people and a dog AND have the car under $25K.

I would drive NOTHING less than a GERMAN station wagon. It must have AWD, bi-xenons, nav(upcoming RNS-510), REAR heated seats(audi which I own), and be fun in the corners, and have high safety ratings(which no US car has ever had-who invented ESP, mercedes that's right). If gas price was no object, there's the Audi S6 and RS6. Otherwise it's down to the A4 or A6 avant, and VW passat(2005 diesel-if it had AWD).
I have the A6 2.7 twin turbo, same engine as in the Audi allroad wagon. Also comes with a V8 and 6 speed slush.

We are loving our Volvo V50. Not many of them on the road - many people are surprised to find out that Volvo makes a SMALL station wagon, in addition to the usual larger V70 one. A very cute and sporty car, with lots of pep in the T5.
