I suggest a Green Light Countdown be employed for all through movements at intersections. The Green Light Countdown would appear 5 seconds prior to a light change (the signal would count down in seconds 5...4...3...2...1). This would eliminate the anxiety and anticipation of bringing the vehicle to a safe stop prior to a red light change. Countdowns are presently in use for walk and dont walk signals. a Green Light Countdown would remove the guess work when a driver enters the "dilemma zone".

I live in Menlo Park, CA. We have two red light cameras within a few blocks of each other on the El Camino Real, a road which stretches from San Francisco to San Jose (and from Mexico to Canada). The yellow light times for these red light cameras are incredibly short, and unlike many other stoplights nowadays, there is no countdown on the pedestrian walk signal. Often, all you see as you approach is a green light and a red pedestrian no crossing signal, which makes you wonder if the light is going to change ANY SECOND.

It is nerve racking and I find myself driving more erratically than I would if there were no cameras. With short yellows and no warning, I often find myself in the position of having to either slam on the brakes or floor it. Not exactly safe.

Does anyone at the NMA (yes I am a member) have suggestions on how to attempt to get the city to make these intersections more safe by either lengthening the yellow light times, putting in countdown timers on the walk signals (so we have some warning) or getting rid of the red light cameras altogether? I don't have a lot of faith as recent articles in our local paper show that the cameras are there purely for profits (city council members almost brag about how much money they are bringing in).

Whether it be traffic law, eminent domain, safety or personal privacy, the corrupt princes and princesses who rule the United States have seen to it that money takes precedence over what is right. I'm just grateful I was able to live, invest and retire in America with an income which allowed me to get out and move across the Atlantic to the Land of the Free.
