I brought my BMW in for service relating to a clunking noise in the rear end at low speeds and a high pitch whirring noise at cruise speed. Also from the rear end. The service liaison (not the tech) called me and reported that the problem is the clockspring in the steering wheel. Upon reading on clocksprings it became very apparent the dealership had not test driven the vehicle and was referring to a service bulletin dealing with a clicking noise in the steering column which is something I never referred to when I brought the car in initially. I thought to myself, here we go...and I was about to go ballistic. I read your tips and it really calmed me down. I will call the dealership tomorrow and let them know that I will need to take a test drive with a tech before I accept delivery or pay for the 'repair'. I seriously doubt if they even read what I had written about what problems the car was experiencing.

#7 doesn't work. I had a problem that wasn't taken care of and I spoke to the auto company after the dealer wouldn't do anything. The response I received was "all our dealers are franchised so we have no control over them".

They want a goverment bailout, but problems on a local level aren't their concern? Let them go bankrupt!

They need a set dresser with a little more automotive experience. Pristine white walls, the only tools around appear to be a drill and an old-fashoned lug wrench (does anyone even use those anymore?) and the tech--well it looks more like the service manager is posing.

That picture doesn't exactly scream reality.

As a 20-year veteran of the car dealer, I agree with everything Peters writes.

I would add one thing: Don't be a dick. We want to fix your problem, really we do. I like nothing more than to fix it fast and bill it to warranty.

But when you start the process with that attitude that all car people are incompetent thieves and you are sooooo much more knowledgable than anyone who is actually doing the work, you are going to get screwed. Hard.

Be nice to me and I will do everything in my power to make sure you get the best work at the best price. Be a sh!thead and you will be treated accordingly.

you used a really bad picture as an example. it appears that the technician is grinding without eye protection. this is a very unsafe practice. if the technician does not care about his own eyes and eyesight, how much does he care about your vehicle?
